HAUSCHKA, TOECHTER

For composer and pianist Hauschka, the essence of his work lies in challenging himself through experimentation. The center of his studies is the grand piano, which he explores and expands as an acoustic body. At the beginning of his solo career, Hauschka specialized in preparing the instrument with tape, felt and other materials. Clubs and concert halls since became his sonic laboratories in which Hauschka's interplay between analysis and intuition can be witnessed.

Hauschka's approach is an interdisciplinary one. Whether for dance and theater, his work with violinist Hilary Hahn, choreographer Aszure Barton or dancer Edivaldo Ernesto, Hauschka creates a subtle dialogue between movement and sound.

Under his civil name Volker Bertelmann, he creates numerous compositions and soundtracks for series and films. In cooperation with Dustin O'Halloran, for example, he created the music for the drama "Lion" (2016), which was nominated for an Oscar. He also received an Oscar nomination in 2023 with his music for the anti-war movie "Im Westen nichts Neues." Hauschka is a person whose creative drive is perpetual trial and error. Experiencing this open-minded approach live on stage is not only fascinating, but also contagious.

We are also pleased to present the band toechter as support for this show: The trio toechter walks between composition and improvisation, chamber music and experiment. Katrine Grarup Elbo, Lisa Marie Vogel and Marie-Claire Schlameus use exclusively analog sound sources (such as violin, viola and cello, occasionally also their voices), which are then electronically processed. This strict specification in the production process - which applies both in the studio and on stage - does not result in a conceptual overhang, however. On the contrary: toechter's feeling for melodies and sensitively shaped soundscapes is at least as pronounced as their will to abstraction. After toechter's debut album "Zephyr" was already honored by the German Record Critics' Award, the trio is currently working on a follow-up for the Berlin-based label Morr Music, which has always catered to musical border crossers and most recently released albums by The Notwist and Benoît Pioulard.

Event starts at: 8:30 p.m.
Opening act: 7:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Doors open at: 6:30 p.m.
